New York Fashion Week News

If you were busy during New York Fashion Week, you missed quite a bit of news. There was so much to see this year including Whoopi Goldberg modeling at a presidential election themed political pageant with a twist of comedy. The pageant was hosted by Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein and political views were discussed in a joking manner with each contestant. The female contestants included Aidy Bryant, Rashida Jones and Whoopi Goldberg. After Whoopi’s time with the hosts of the pageant, she made sure to strut down the catwalk. Whoopi was seen wearing a black calf length dress adorned with large flowing ruffles at the shoulders and through the lower half of the dress. Her black shoes with thick soles and heels matched her strong personality and made for an amazing opening ceremony.

This year’s fashion week featured a broad range of models wearing some beautiful and interesting styles by the hottest designers. However, not every fashion was tailored to the average model. The biggest trend saw brands implementing fashionable attire for different body types. Chromat featured various plus-size models including Iskra Lawrence who posted on Instagram that, after 13 years of modeling, she would make her first runway appearance at NYFW. Lawrence was seen rocking a royal blue swim suit with an elegantly placed black frontal zipper. Christian Siriano also featured some plus-size models wearing long sleeve and spaghetti strap dresses.

J. Crew also attended this year’s New York Fashion Week with an interesting choice of models. The brand typically sends professional models down the runway but they didn’t feature any professional models this year. Instead, they gathered their friends and past employees to model their spring collection. Some of their models included a fashion and brand consultant, a DJ, a stylist, a baker and an 8th grader. Some of the styles they presented incorporated button-up casual shirts, collared blouses, calf length khaki skirts and casual crew neck shirts.

Tommy Hilfiger revealed his partnership with Gigi Hadid by presenting a nautical-themed collection which matched Hilfiger’s classics with Hadid’s style. The background was an enjoyable carnival setting on Pier 16 at the South Street Seaport with carnival rides, cotton candy machines, temporary tattoo booths and food vendors. Gigi came down the runway wearing leather pants, a knotted tank top, shrunken sailor jacket and a fringe neck scarf before other models graced the audience wearing nautical-inspired fashions. Hilfiger’s collection ranged from street styles such as slim trousers and statement jackets to logo tees and tracksuits.
