Lesser known as an animal sanctuary. The Arboretum’s visitors will see species of resident and migratory birds, aquatic creatures, as well as numerous species of small reptiles and mammals. The now indigenous Peafowl are the crowning natural jewel of the wildlife menagerie.
In the late 1800’s Lucky Baldwin introduced the Peafowl, Pavo cristatus, to Los Angeles. These majestic birds thrived, becoming, like sparrows and pigeons, a naturalized species. A little known fact is that just the colorful males of this pheasant related bird species are called peacocks. The females are called peahens and the birds as a whole are referred to as peafowl. Not only are they colorful but peafowl keep the Arboretum’s snail population to a minimum.
