Los Angeles Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is a wildlife sanctuary too.

In the late 1800’s Lucky Baldwin introduced the Peafowl, Pavo cristatus, to Los Angeles. These majestic birds thrived, becoming, like sparrows and pigeons, a naturalized species. A little known fact is that just the colorful males of this pheasant related bird species are called peacocks. The females are called peahens and the birds as a whole are referred to as peafowl.
